8.

KEIRA OPENED her eyes and discovered that she was strapped to a cold, aluminum, operating table. Her hospital gown had been removed and she was still in her regular clothes. Oh God, the dream! It’s really happening! They’re going to cut me open! She shook violently, trying to free herself from the restraints. How long have I been unconscious? The last thing I remember is those Paragon techs cutting us out from the foam and spraying sleeping gas in our faces. I don’t feel any pain; so no operation yet. The room was dark except for the pools of light beneath the surgical lamps overhead.

Keira heard breathing beside her. To her right, Lumen was similarly immobilized, gown removed, strapped to a metal table beneath a surgical lamp. To her left were James and Paul. It was dark and quiet. They were the only ones in the operating theater. UBE was nowhere to be seen, but Keira could feel him nearby. Out of habit, she tried to feel where Tenzing was in her pocket. And then it came horribly back to her, Tenzing shrieking, the splattering blood, and the vile demon smirking. Keira couldn’t hold back the tears. She gasped and moaned. Lumen stirred next to her.

“Keira? Are you okay? Are you injured?” Lumen asked quickly.

Keira didn’t answer immediately. She was lost in the horror of the last moments of Tenzing’s life. It’s so cruel, so unfair! He never hurt anyone. It’s all my fault. She looked over at Lumen and replied to her. “Only my heart.”

“I can’t tell you how sorry I am,” Lumen said in a soothing voice. “Tenzing was a great guy. I’m really going to miss him.”

“I can’t believe he’s gone. Why would that demon kill him?”

“Tenzing had some kind of power over him, right?” Lumen asked.

“I guess he was still afraid of him,” Keira said and laughed a little sadly at this. “That big creepy jerk was scared of a tiny rat.”

“Oh my God, Asmodeus is so disgusting,” Lumen said quickly. “Did he have to stand there naked in front of us? Gross!”

“I don’t want to think about it,” Keira said and then whispered. “Can you use your power at all?”

“I don’t know. A little bit, but not a lot.”

Keira looked over at Lumen’s wrists; they were manacled with the power-reducing handcuffs. She shook her own arms and felt the cold grip of the cuffs.

“These cuffs only deaden your power, they don’t turn it off completely,” Lumen said, barely able to read Keira’s thoughts. “See if you can turn them into something else.”

“I’ll try,” Keira said and closed her eyes. She felt the first tiny surge of energy move inside her, but it was instantly drained into the absorbing cuffs. Keira turned her head a little to the left and tried again. Nothing. Not a thing. “I can’t do it.” Keira started to cry again.

“Keira, you need to concentrate. You’ve been through a lot. I know. It’s distracting you. You are the only one who can get out of these cuffs.
